The Brush Bull

Here are a couple bulls I was able to film while out scouting for elk just a few days before the archery season with Josh Esparza. We followed this and another good bull for about an hour before we were finally able to get a look at him. Unfortunately, there was a bunch of brush in the way. Rather than push him, we decided to leave them undisturbed. We never did go back to hunt him or the other bull we found that morning, although they were both solid bulls.

Here are a few still images of the brush bull.

The Big 4 Bull

Check out this bull my friend Jeff Lester of Hunt Hard Outfitters filmed! What a beauty! Great width and beams with some studly G4s. Unfortunately he had no hunters with him the day he filmed it.

Velvet Freak Bull

While scouting for elk last season, we came across this bull a couple different times. We had glassed him from a long ways off and knew he had some non typical points. This was the first time we were able to get close enough to get some good footage of him. He has a real unique point that curls back off the beam behind his right ear.

The Sawtooth Bull

While looking for another specific bull during an archery hunt we came across this bull. We called him Sawtooth due to the two small inline extra points toward the end of his left main beam. He is a great bull and put on quite a show for us while we continued to look for the bull we had come into the area to find.

The Kneedy Bull

About a week before the archery elk season started I was able to glass this bull from a very long way. He was so far away I couldn't tell exactly how big he was, but I knew I should get a better look. The following morning I slipped into the area I had glassed him and found him courtin' a couple dozen cows. As the hunt wore on, he was managing to keep up with over 60 women! We hunted this bull hard for most of the hunt. Due to the open terrain, we found ourselves stalking on our hands knees daily, just trying to get a shot at the big bull!

Droopy Horned Bull

While scouting in mid June I found this bull with a few younger bulls. His unique eyeguards really made him stick out, but his royals were just starting to take shape. I never saw this bull again until the last couple days before the archery hunt ended. After several minutes of debate and with only one day of hunting remaining, my hunter decided to pass at 41 yards! Mid day while reviewing the footage, he had second thoughts. So, we went back to hunt the droopy horned bull that evening. We finally spotted him just before dark and moved into position to call. He responded quickly to the calls, but hung up at 60 yards. With the fading light and longer than comfortable range, my hunter decided to pass once again. Maybe we'll find him again this year!

Jay's 7x8 Archery Bull

While scouting for the upcoming archery elk season I found this cool 7x8 bull. I was fortunate to get some nice footage of this bull that my friend Jay shot later in the hunt.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

My friend Delverne Merrill took his cousin out for his first archery bull hunt. After several days of chasing a giant bull, his cousin got caught up in the moment and let an arrow fly. Although it wasn't the bull they were after, the hit made for some awesome footage!

Sizing up Mr. Massey

During one of my scouting trips with Jeremiah, we came across this bull. Wind was perfect and I was able to sneek in real close and get some great footage. We nicknamed him Mr. Massey. He is a pretty cool bull with good mass and a couple small extra points. Everybody I have look at him comes up with a different score. I was curious, what do y'all think he would gross?

Broc's NM Archery Muley

Check out the story and footage of Sneek Freak Broc Brimhall's big Mule deer that he arrowed in New Mexico.

My brother's (Ian and Brett) and myself had archery deer and elk tags
in new Mexico.  Not a great unit but fun nonetheless.  Brett and I had
tagged out on day 2 an 4 with some entertainment bulls ( raghorns), so
we changed our attention to mule deer.  Even though we had hunted
hard up to this point in what use to be great mule deer country, we
went most days w/o seeing a deer.  Regardless, we were going to try.
I killed my elk one evening and we didn't get back to camp until
midnight.  4 o'clock am came awfully early.  We set out for a place
that we use to see lots of bucks 10 years earlier.  We left the truck
a little after daylight still hunting on the edge of a canyon.  We had
gone less than a mile when I saw a flash of movement about 200 yards
ahead.  The binos revealed some bucks feeding in the thick trees.  We
crept about 100 yards further towards there direction of travel when
we notice a buck exit the trees at about 85 yards.  I knew that there
were at least 5 other bucks in the trees that I hadn't got a good look
at but the buck in front of me was definitely good enough.  He was
slowly feeding from left to right.  I ranged him at 72 yards, drew my
bow and took aim as best as my nerves would allow.  After the shot the
buck jumped and started trotting in a loop going back to the other
deer.  I had no idea that I even hit the buck so I was knocking
another arrow so I could launch a hail merry when the deer collapsed.
I was shocked!  This deer was more than I could of asked for on this
hunt.  The arrow had struck the deer in the heart and was found 100
yards beyond where the buck was standing at time of the shot.  Great
hunt with my 2 brothers and cousin and a buck that scored around 175".

Congrats on a fine Mule deer Broc!
